Getting The Most From A Stainless Steel Coffee Filter
In general, our 74 micron (40 nominal micron) stainless steel is by far the most popular with cold brew coffee brewers. It's ideal for cold brewing as it holds the coffee
grounds in extremely well but still allows the flavor and oils to come through. Our 100 micron (65 nominal Micron) stainless mesh is also popular for cold brewing coffee, but
not quite as much as 74 micron. It has a slightly larger hole size which allows for better flow, but depending on your grind, it can also allow a little sediment through. Many
of our larger cold brewing coffee filters are built in this size as it lends itself well to high volume and holds up really well in service. We also have built some cold
brew coffee filters in 43 micron (35 nominal micron) but it's not nearly as popular as the 74 micron. While 43 micron is great for brewing in, flow rates are reduced and
it can be a little more difficult to clean. We can also build any of our filters in any of our
other micron sizes as well.
Not sure which one you want to use? We offer Stainless Steel Sample Sheets
in every micron size we carry that you can test with your coffee to see which works best for you.
In general, you want the largest filter you can fit into your brewing container. This will give you optimum surface area for the coffee grounds to brew into the liquid.
We recommend leaving a minimum of 1/4" between the filter and the inside diameter of the brewing vessel. When measuring your brewing container, be sure to measure the
inside diameter at both the top and bottom of the vessel as some vessels are tapered.
For the filter style, pick a filter that can handle the weight of your coffee grinds. Coffee triples it's weight when wet, so 25 lbs of coffee can get up to 75 lbs when wet.
If you're using more than 8 to 10 lbs (24 to 30 lbs wet) of coffee, we recommend getting a Brew In A Basket style filter. If you're using more than 25 lbs (75+ lbs wet)
of coffee, we recommend getting a basket with a perforated stainless steel backer to handle the weight.

Clean the filter before it's initial use. We recommend a cleaner such as PBW.
After each use, spray your cold brewing coffee filter off with a heavy stream of water.
For stubborn residue, soak at 180° F in PBW. Let soak overnight & rinse with hot water.
Periodically we also recommend Passivating your filter.

Glass Jar Cold Brew Coffee Filters Ideal for brewing in 32 ounce, 64 ounce, and 1 gallon glass jars!
Want to make a batch of cold brew coffee but don't need a lot of it? Then you'll love our cold brewing coffee filters for glass jars!
They allow you to easily make small batches of cold brewed coffee really easily! Just grab a glass jar, insert the filter, add coffee grounds and water,
let it steep and chill for your preferred time, and then lift the filter out and you're ready to serve!
All Stainless Steel Construction
Our Cold Brew Coffee Filters for glass jars are made from 100% 304 stainless steel which means you get great cold brew coffee taste with none of the drawbacks
of a fiber or paper filter! A paper or fiber filter has a tendency to leach some of it's compounds into the cold brewed coffee which can taint that great cold
brew taste. Stainless steel on the other hand is all metal and leaches nothing into the coffee! This means you get to taste 100% of the coffee flavor and nothing else!
To make removing the cold brew coffee filter from your glass jar we also include an easy to grab bar right across the top. Just reach a finger down, grab the bar, and easily
pull it out after steeping your brew to reveal a great batch of cold brewed coffee! We offer the filters with glass jars in a 32 ounce, 64 ounce, and 128 ounce sizes.
Fits Glass Jars Perfectly
We've been building stainless steel filters for quite some time now and we've perfected making filters to fit just about every container you can think of!
We've used this expertise to build these filters so they're a perfect fit! They slide down into the mouth of our 32 ounce, 64 ounce, and 128 ounce (1 gallon) glass jars with ease.
You just add the coffee grounds, water, and cap it and you're ready to steep!
Making A Great Batch Of Cold Brewed Coffee
While we're no experts at cold brewing coffee, we talk to several cold brewing pro's all the time. Based on what they tell us,
they recommend using a 1:1 gallon to pound ratio. Given that we're working with a 32 ounc jar, or 1/4 of a gallon, and given that the coffee is
going to displace some of the liquid in the jar, we recommend using less than 1/4 of a pound (Tip: There are 16 ounces in 1 pound).
In tests we ran with some small batches, 3.65 ounces of coffee grounds allowed us to top the jar off with about 27 ounces of water.
Remember that this will create a concentrated coffee meant to be poured over ide or diluted down a bit too. You can also add hot water for traditional coffee
too. Just remember that just like brewing beer, personal preferences and different opinions will dictate your exact recipe, but this should give you a good start.
Additional Cold Brewing Tips
- Use a 1:1 ratio of coffee grounds to water (1 lb coffee to 1 gal water) for concentrated batches
--- 32 ounce jars - 3.65 oz coffee grounds to 27 ounces of water is a good starting point
--- 64 ounce jars - 7.25 oz coffee grounds to 56 ounces of water
- A course grind is preferrable. Grinding the coffee too fine can actually heat them up creating some astringent flavors that cold brewing helps eliminate.
- The minerals in your water will influence your coffee flavor. Consider using water from different sources to find what works
best for you
- 12 to 15 hours at room temperature or in a fridge tends to be a good steeping time, but some brewers steep for as long as 24 hours
- A typical cold brewed batch in the fridge should last about 2 to 3 weeks.
- Experiment with different amounts of coffee to influence flavor
