Sodium Hydroxide, also known as Lye or NaOH, is one of the primary catalysts that can be used in the Biodiesel production process. Our Sodium Hydroxide is available in an assortment of quantities and will come shipped in caustic bead form. This is high-quality, industrial grade Sodium Hydroxide which is perfect for producing Biodiesel.
Potassium Hydroxide, also known as Caustic Potash or KOH, is the other primary catalyst commonly used in the Biodiesel production process. It is commonly used over Sodium Hydroxide because it is easier to dissolve in methanol, creates "runnier" glycerin, and is thought to be more environmentally friendly to use. It is high-quality, industrial grade flake form and is used by the majority of biodiesel producers due to it's superior qualities.
Sulfuric acid is commonly used to produce Biodiesel using a technique called acid esterification. The sulfuric acid attacks free fatty acids in the oil and allows methanol to attach to them to form Biodiesel instead of forming soap. We offer sulfuric acid in pre-measured bottles for use in the BioPro 190 Automated Biodiesel Processor as well as in larger bottles. Phenolphthalein has long been the preferred chemical for doing titrations with. It's accuracy at indicating a Ph change has been well documented all over the internet and in biodiesel publications. It changes from a clear solution to a light pink when the Ph changes. It indicates a change right around 8.2.
